In my opion One Wheel Electric Skateboard are great for transporataion and balance training but they don’t contributute to the sport of skatboarding beyond that.
Please don’t misunderstand me, I think One Wheel skateboards are the Bomb, and you should definately own one if you can. I have a OneWheel, and I would argue it some of the best money I have ever spent. I love it, but it will never replace my first love which is skateboarding or time spent at my skateboard park.
I think these new one wheel electric skateboards are great to help new skateboarders learn balance, and I ride mind to the strip mall down the street at leas three times a week when I need to stock up on snacks. My boys and I ride our off road at a local family park quite often, and on a vacation to NY City, I had my OneWheeler with me and it provide a site seeing experience like nothing I have ever experienced.
So these boards have a place in the market, they are alot of fun without a lot of work or exercise and I wouldn’t sell mine for a million dollars if I couldn’t replace it. I see my one wheel board as a mode of transportation, a very exhilirating fun mode of transportation and a valuable balance training tool for young skateboarders.
With that said here are thte Top 5 Electirc One Wheel Skateboards avaialbe in the market today.

HX Edition One-Wheeled+4 Electric Skateboard/Hoverboard with Patented Safety Wheels
A one wheel skateboard is the best site seeing experience you can have in a city. I am planning on heading to New Orleans for the first time this fall and I know my one wheeler is going to to make the experience that much more enjoyable., Everytime I am on the board a lot of people stop and stare, confused by how I am managing to maintain my balance while traveling so fast.
That’s the sheer draw of a single wheel skateboard, they allow you to balance atop a spinning rubber wheel while you surf around the streets — it is one of the most enjoyable experiences in life. I know that sounds corny, but I sincerely mean it. I have traveled a lot in my short life, I constantly wish I had had my single wheel when I first started traveling.
I first heard about it after the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. After finally buying one and getting to ride around on one, I can confirm that it’s as fun and exhilarating as it looks. The self-balancing sensors make these physics-defying skateboard even possible.

OneWheel
The Onewheel originally started as a side project, invented by Kyle Doerksen in his free time before he got a prototype working and took it to Kickstarter. The Kickstarter campaign quickly took off, crushing its $100,000 goal and eventually raising over $630,000, which I was part of. Fast forward to today, and Onewheel has fulfilled its Kickstarter pre-orders and is shipping consumer orders as fast as possible. Many more successful brands have hit the market, and the one wheel skateboard craze has officially started.
The technology that makes these boards work is the self-balancing sensors. However this is also what make is more difficult to master. It takes some practice.
To mount the Onewheel, you first place your back foot on the rear of the board, and then you place your front foot on two pressure-sensing pads on the front of the board — which engages the motor resting inside the wheel — while you slowly lean forward.
The motor then kicks in, and you’re balanced almost automatically. Lean forward, and you’ll accelerate, lean backwards, and you’ll slow to an eventual stop. If you keep leaning backwards while at a standstill, you’ll start to move in referce. Sound simple, but it does take a little bit of practice. Riders prefer to ride facing a certain direction, just like they do on skateboards and snowboards.
Turning also takes some getting used to, as you need to remember to continue leaning forward through the duration of the turn. After a ten or twenty minutes on the board you will get the hang of it. For something as foreign as balancing and turning on a single wheel, I’d say the One wheel skatboard is still pretty easy to pick up and get profient quickly.
When riding a skateboard, sharp turns are pretty difficult and most of the time you turn by leaning — but the four wheels cause your turns to be more sweeping and broad. Thanks to a single wheel, it’s much easier to weave your way around people or rotate around by leaning heavily in one direction while keeping your balance tipped forward. That is really the key of it, lean forward as you lean towards the way you want to turn.
It is really incredible how fast a single wheel skateboard can move. fast. Early boards only travel at speeds up to 12 miles per hour — which still feels pretty zippy when you’re riding around on one wheel — but thanks to the ability to update the board’s firmware through the an app, so boards can now hit 15mph.
The app is your hub for checking the battery life and fine-tuning the feel of your ride. Onewheel refers to these customization settings as “digital shaping,” and the various settings such as “Classic” and “Extreme” tweak various speed settings to alter the feel of the ride.
The “Classic” is best way for beginners to start — it causes the board to tip backwards slightly and slow once you hit about 8 or 9 miles per hour. “Extreme” is looser setting for more experienced riders that doesn’t feature this limitation and allows speeds up to 15 miles per hour.
One of the coolest features of the Onewheel is that its app enables riders to update the firmware of the board wirelessly via Bluetooth. That means that in the future, single wheel skateboards can introduce more customizations and riding settings and all riders will need to do is stand close to their board with their phone in hand. How cool is that?
Most batteries are good for 4 to 6 miles of riding, but it recharges in only 20 minutes, making it feasible for riders to carry the charging cable with them in their backpack and plug in to extend their range. When site seeing we road sit down and enjoyed a coffee while charging, road, sit down an people watched in the park etc. When you think about it 4-6 miles is a long way in most cities.
There’s no doubt that these one wheel skateboards are a ton of fun, but unfortunately it all comes at hefty cost — the Onewheel retails for up to $1,999. Over 30 people came up to us while we were riding to ask more about the Onewheel, but when I told them the price a majority of them laughed. While you could compare purchasing a Onewheel to the cost of a nice bike or tricking out a snowboard and purchasing ski lift tickets, the $1,999 price point is still going to be far too steep for a majority of riders. I guess this is why owning one has become almost like a status symbol.
If you’re in a position to drop that kind of money on a fun way to commute and have a blast on the weekends, and when traveling the Onewheel will certainly deliver.
